Disc Formats to Come

Here are some disc formats that are likely to cross your way in the future. It´s not yet foreseeable which format will win the race but maybe Sony´s PS3 (equipped with a Blu-ray drive) will set the records straight.

HD-DVD:

capacity: 15 GB
content: data storage, high-definition movies
video-codec: MPEG-1/2, VC-1, H.264/AVC

Blu-ray Disc:

capacity: 25 GB
content: data storage, high-definition movies
video-codec: MPEG-1/2, VC-1, H.264/AVC

HVD:

capacity: 200 GB
intended capacity: 3,9 TB
content: data storage, high-definition movies

WMV-HD-Disc:

capacity: ?
content: data storage, high-definition movies

A disk formatting may set up multiple file systems by formatting partitions for each file system. Disk formatting is also part of a process involving rebuilding an entire disk from scratch. A variety of utilities and programs exist for this task.
